    General Questions

    1. Can one suppressor work for multiple calibers?

Depends on the calibers – A .223 suppressor will work effectively with .22LR – However a suppressor manufactured for .30 has limited effectiveness on a .223.  AWC suppressors internal components are designed to most efficiently handle the specific gas of the marked caliber.

    2. Do I need some type of special license?

No license, Just pay a onetime $200.00 NFA Tax Stamp.

    3. What are the requirements to own a silencer?

Must be a legal US resident, 21 years of age or older, have no felonies, no domestic violence issues and live in a state that allows ownership.  In other words if you can legally purchase a gun you can legally own a suppressor.

    4. How do I start the purchasing process?

    Simply place your order.

    5. What is the difference between a silencer and a suppressor?

Nothing  – A suppressor, sound suppressor, sound moderator, or silencer, is a device either attached to or part of the barrel of a firearm to reduce the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon.

    6. What makes a silencer work?

In short - an effective silencer strips the projectile of the hot gas and absorbs and dissipates the heat/energy quickly.

The full answer to the question can be found in the “Suppressor Information” section.  The simple truth is that, the more you understand about suppressors and the environment they operate in, the more you can appreciate the products we make here at AWC Systems Technology.

    7. Do suppressed weapons sound like they do in the movies?

Movie depicted silencer sounds are produced by a sound engineer with items that have nothing to do with weapons.  There are exceptions, AWC\'s contributions to movies. If you would like to see our silencers on film, we recommend Stallone/Bandares film "Assassins." All the suppressors in that film were made by AWC, credited on film,  and the resulting sounds were filmed "as is." The result is as you hear it, extremely quiet…"Movie Quiet."  Just note, that our legendary Amphibian is even quieter now as we are three more generations and 15 years of progress further into its manufacture! All suppressors manufactured by AWC reduce the noise to levels below that of a 22LR.

    8. Why doesn’t AWC use replaceable wipes in their designs?

Over two decades ago, we did as that was the technology of the day. It is a fact to say that the use of replaceable wipes in a silencer/suppressor destroy the accuracy of any weapon as anything that touches the bullet is counter productive.

Now, with improvements in design and materials, our suppressors outperform wipe designs and last a lifetime. Lastly, we believe the BATF is currently disallowing any part to be held outside of an assembled suppressor.

    9. Why doesn’t AWC offer their suppressors in “Quick Detach”?
Over the course of the last decade we too have watched as some suppressor manufacturers provide “quick detach” assemblies. We have given this some considerable attention here at AWC since 1986 when we first experimented with and produced product with “quick detach” (QD) features.  What we found, and our customers confirmed about  QD may surprise you.
  • Threading on a suppressor remains less than 20 seconds, is the strongest, most precise and cleanest way to mount.
  • QD is the number one problem concerning alignment and potential baffle strike.
  • QD provides the poorest of gas seals under extreme conditions, degrading suppressor performance.
  • QD is not as accurate on precision rifles as properly threaded assembly.
  • QD units quickly “carbon up” creating considerable assembly/disassembly issues that threading does not.
  • QD is actually QA (Quick Attach) as a suppressor may go on faster, but when that suppressor gets hot, it gets red hot, and is hardly QD.
  • QD, with its requirement for the flash/compensator is heavier on the barrel.
  • QD can use more than 2” of wasted suppressor space, causing additional weight.
  • QD requires the operator to buy more proprietary gadgets for the end of every weapon that will have a suppressor mounted.
  • Operationally, few of our Military and Police Clients have found a reason to need QD, referring to the whole process as being driven by the civilian market.

In the end, in service, keep it simple as less to go wrong is always the best way forward.
